Therapeutic Riding Horse Petra H. Fjord Receives Honorable Mention for Social Service Recognition Award

East Lyme, CT – High Hopes is proud to announce that Petra H. Fjord, one of its beloved therapeutic riding horses, has received an Honorable Mention from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut as part of the 15th Annual Social Service Recognition Awards. These awards traditionally honor outstanding individuals and organizations dedicated to making a positive impact in our community.  By receiving this Honorable Mention, Petra is breaking the “hay ceiling” in Equine staff achievement.

Since joining the High Hopes herd in February 1999 at just four years old, Petra, a Norwegian Fjord, has dedicated her life to bringing joy, comfort, and healing to countless individuals over the past 24 years. Known for her calm and patient demeanor, she has proven to be an exceptional equine team member.

“Her commitment to her work shines through in her willingness to tackle any task, no matter how big or small,” says Executive Director of High Hopes, Missy Lamont, who notes that Petra is one of their most reliable and tolerant horses and has a heart of gold.  “Whether assisting riders during horsemanship classes, participating in special events, or simply offering a gentle nuzzle, Petra approaches every challenge with a positive attitude and a gentle spirit.”

An instructor at High Hopes, Carolyn Jagielski, PT, PATH Intl. CTRI, ESMHL, remembers this heart-warming story:

A young boy dismounted Petra. Petra swung her head around like she always does to acknowledge her rider, and her head came up to the boy’s cheek. Usually, he would pull away. This time he did not. He stayed in contact with her for about five seconds and then kissed her. Petra moved her head back to regular position, we talked for a second, and then I told the boy to “say goodbye to Petra.” She swung her head back up to his cheek. The boy kissed her again, and very clearly said,” HORSE.” This was the first time this boy had been heard by High Hopes’ instructors. It was a precious moment for all to witness!

Beyond her therapeutic role, Petra serves as a teacher and friend to instructors, participants, and volunteers alike. For more information about Petra and her contributions to the High Hopes community, please visit High Hopes.
